Process

Typically I meet with the subject and do a photo session myself. The client can arrange his own photographer but I would like to have input into that process and can recommend a photographer. I prefer to have the client sit for me even if only for an hour to do an oil sketch along with the photographs. That way I can be sure to get the pose I want and find the expression that best captures the subject’s personality. If I do the photography myself, any necessary transportation is not included in the price.

An oil portrait is a significant investment and one which can have great value to a family or institution. For that reason I normally work closely with the subject or the purchaser during the planning, execution, and finalization. When the painting is completed, it will be varnished and I often help in the process of selecting an appropriate frame. The entire process can take three to five months.
